Review safety requirements for nuclear installations

The war in Ukraine carries the risk of another nuclear catastrophe. The district association and the district parliamentary group therefore support the demands of the Bundestag parliamentary group on the 36th anniversary of the nuclear accident in Chernobyl to review the safety requirements for nuclear facilities.

If there is an interruption in cooling due to operating errors, a loss of coolant or a prolonged power grid failure, an accident is imminent. Europe has been confronted with this danger for several weeks, when nuclear power plants, temporary storage facilities and Chernobyl itself were in Russian hands for weeks, cut off from electricity and under fire. Cyber attacks on critical infrastructure also pose a major threat to nuclear power plants. In the current situation, the question must therefore be asked how safe nuclear power plants are in military conflicts.

Also to be considered is the dependence on Russia in the field of energy production from nuclear power, which must be ended. Russia is still supplying fuel rods to Europe. The expansion of renewable energies is necessary for independence from Russia in terms of energy production and nuclear power is not an alternative, especially due to the security risks.
