Request for Plastic Consumption from the Administration

Subject of the question:

On August 31, 2018, the district council decided to dispense with avoidable single-use plastic products in the buildings of the district, in the district's own companies and at events.

Questions:

What measures have been implemented since then

a)      From the administration?

Answer:
– Fruit and cereals are offered exclusively in jars.

– Salads and dressings ‘to go’ are packed in compostable containers.

– Coffee cups are also dispensed as compostable containers.

– The MKK pitcher is offered.

– It is possible to have your own cups filled.

– With the exception of candy bars and sandwich packaging, no plastic packaging is used anymore.

b)      from the county's own businesses?

Answer:

In the information collection, only the district-owned companies were taken into account, which have a relevant potential (e.g. through the operation of a canteen, gastronomy or patient care) and are mostly owned by the Main-Kinzig-Kreis.  

Answer aQa gGmbH

– To the greatest extent possible, no portion packs

– Dispensing of food is carried out in PVC-free disposable packaging at an additional cost or in a reusable deposit system.

– The distribution of cold beverages is largely carried out in reusable systems.

– It is possible to have your own cups filled.

Answer APZ gGmbH

– Only own cups/glasses are filled. (all hot and cold drinks)

– Avoidance of small containers in the provision of food for residents, conversion to large containers has taken place

– Almost without exception, reusable tableware and cutlery are used at events (summer party, Christmas party, company outings, etc.).

– If disposable tableware (exceptional case), then bamboo material is available.

– Raise awareness of avoidable single-use products among staff during the ordering process.

– Initiation of the Climate Saviour project to raise staff awareness, staff information and training

Note: A large proportion of plastic or packaging waste cannot be avoided in the context of elderly care, especially during the coronavirus pandemic, solely for hygienic reasons.

Answer Own-account youth and leisure facilities

– The EB JFE uses only reusable tableware and cutlery.

– Possibility of filling/using own cups/cups/cans.

– Purchase of large containers and the associated reduction or extensive renunciation of single-use plastic/single-use and portion packaging in the catering sector (partially suspended in the context of the coronavirus pandemic for hygienic reasons).

– Purchase/sale of beverages in reusable bottles

– Raise awareness of avoidable single-use products among staff during the ordering process.

– Planned qualification of an EB employee as a ‘sustainability officer in community catering’; 8 modules with a total of 71 training units (but cancelled in 2020/2021 due to the coronavirus outbreak, will be rescheduled in 2022).

– Purchase of large containers in the domestic/technical sector and the associated integration of dosing systems (e.g. detergents, operating materials swimming pool).

Answer Main-Kinzig clinics

– There are no more disposable coffee cups in the cafeterias.

– It is possible to have your own coffee cup filled.

– The MK-Krug is to be used (or the planned deposit system of the MK Kreis).

– The restitution samples shall be packed in compostable containers.

– Jams, spreads, condensed milk, yoghurts, puddings, chocolate bars, sandwiches in disposable packaging for hygiene reasons.

– Salads in the cafeteria are offered in glass bowls.

– Salads intended for the care of patients are bottled in reusable trays or compostable containers.

– There are wooden stirring sticks on the stations

– For events, reusable tableware or biodegradable tableware (palm leaf, etc.) is used.

– All ToGo bowls in the cafeteria are compostable

Note: In the field of medical patient care, disposable packaging cannot be dispensed with for hygienic reasons. If possible, they will be recycled. In some cases, however, these must be used for thermal recovery as part of the hospital waste.

– Exclusive use of reusable tableware

– Sugar cans instead of packaged sugar sticks

– No longer single milk cans but milk jugs

– Natural jute bags instead of plastic bags

– No more packed cookies etc. for catering

– Post-IT plastic packaging switched to natural paper packaging

c)       at events?

Answer:

Reusable dishes are used.

How many kilos of plastic waste is the county's management estimated to produce?

Answer:

Since the plastic waste is not weighed, no information can be given on the weight.

At the administrative sites there are a total of 17 containers with a capacity of 1.1 m3 each, which are emptied monthly.

Are further measures planned to avoid single-use plastic products?

Answer:

No further measures are currently planned.

Are there training courses for employees on how a workplace can be ecologically designed through climate and environmental protection measures?

Answer:

No.
