Pioneering projects in the circle are gaining momentum
Green Group takes stock of rail development
Which rail projects will be important in the coming years and with which ideas can these projects be accompanied? This was the topic of the Green parliamentary group in a joint discussion with Dr. Gunther Quidde, Managing Director of the Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) Hanau-Gelnhausen-Schlüchtern, and with Rüdiger Krenkel, Managing Director of the Main-Kinzig District Transport Company (KVG).
"In the coming years, there will be the opportunity to both implement and advance important rail projects in the district. This is an important locational advantage if an attractive public transport offer can be used for commuting to work.”, Quidde and Krenkel report in their presentation.
There are currently numerous rail projects in the district. For example, the Hanau-Gelnhausen expansion line and then the Gelnhausen-Fulda new construction line are currently being implemented. The expansion and the four-track route will separate long-distance and freight traffic between Hanau and Gelnhausen from regional traffic. A completely new route is being built between Gelnhausen and Fulda. A new route is also needed for the realisation of the Nordmainische S-Bahn. Here Hanau and Frankfurt are to be connected via Maintal with a direct S-Bahn line.
"There are a number of other rail projects to be tackled in the coming years, including the modernisation and expansion of the Niddertalbahn, which connects the municipalities of Niederdorfelden, Schöneck and Nidderau, and the Lahn-Kinzig-Bahn between Gießen and Gelnhausen", concludes Reiner Bousonville, Chairman of the Green Main-Kinzig Group. For many of these construction projects, Deutsche Bahn is planning a realisation in 2028: “This would mean that we will get a significant upgrade of public transport in the Main-Kinzig district in this decade. This is an important sign after years of standstill.”
This is because: "The Main-Kinzig district is facing pioneering rail projects", said the Group leader. Switching to climate-friendly mobility alternatives is essential: ‘Public transport is a good way to get from A to B in a climate-friendly way,’ said Bousonville. “The way we move will be crucial for the further course of climate change. We also have to look at the eastern part of the Main-Kinzig-Kreis. For the people there, mobility is not feasible without the car. Here, both the district and the KVG are required to create attractive offers for public transport. We Greens will be committed to this.”
Severe weather conditions such as those recently experienced in western Germany speak a clear language: "It is all the more significant then that the Grand Coalition in the district does not set its priorities for climate protection," said Bousonville. The expansion and upgrading of public transport with smart links between bus, train, walking and cycling is one of the topics for the Green Group in the current parliamentary term: “Especially an area district such as the Main-Kinzig-Kreis needs a reasonable and adapted to the reality of life of the people local transport concept. Otherwise, the switch from the car to the bus and train cannot succeed. The current rail projects now give us the opportunity to make local transport fit for the future", concludes Bousonville.
