Greens at the Kinzig Water Association

Greens from the Hessian state parliament and the district inform themselves at the water association Kinzig about drinking water production from surface water

Storms with floods and drought summers of recent years with water shortages. The consequences of the climate crisis are also noticeable in Hesse. The valuable resource of water is at the heart of the ‘Guidance on Integrated Water Resource Management’, which the Hessian State Government has developed with all stakeholders.

Against this background, the Hessian state parliamentarians Eva Goldbach, Martina Feldmayer and Markus Hofmann (BÜNDNIS 90/DIE GRÜNEN), the parliamentary group chairman of BÜNDNIS 90/DIE GRÜNEN in the Main-Kinzig district council, Reiner Bousonville, and Knut Kiesel, GRÜNER Bundestag direct candidate for constituency 175, had the pilot project of the Water Association Kinzig (WVK) for the production of drinking water also from surface water presented at a local appointment on 16 July 2021.
The state of Hesse is funding the project with around 250,000 euros. The renowned ecologist Dr. Hans-Otto Wack, the head of the Kinzig Water Association, Thomas Wissgott, and WVK managing director Holger Scheffler explained the background of the plant.
“Innovative solutions for the economical use of our most precious commodity, water, are exemplary. Even though it doesn't look like drought at the moment, we have to be careful with our highest good water. Water treatment from surface water is a forward-looking model here", says Martina Feldmayer, spokesperson for environmental policy for the Greens in the Hessian State Parliament.

For Eva Goldbach, who has her constituency in Vogelsberg, it is also important that the increasing water demand of the Rhine-Main agglomeration does not come at the expense of valuable protected landscapes in Vogelsberg: "The guiding principle for the economical use of water, which was initiated by the state government, is the right way forward. Funding for such projects is groundbreaking and reduces pressure on water extraction areas such as Vogelsberg.”

Markus Hofmann, spokesman for the fire brigade policy of the Green Parliamentary Group, said: “The current situation shows us: Climate protection is the best security."

Reiner Bousonville attaches particular importance to the best water quality and security of supply: “We conserve our groundwater here and get water of impeccable quality. I am pleased that here in the Main-Kinzig district we can serve as a model for environmentally friendly water production.”
