GroKo in the MKK: ‘Signs of time not recognised’

Regression for the Main-Kinzig-Kreis

"The continuation of the Grand Coalition is a step backwards for the Main-Kinzig district and the citizens", says Reiner Bousonville, leader of the Green Group in the district council.

"The idea of the coalition agreement already suggests that in the next five years the district will only be managed without innovative ideas and, above all, without a sword-pointing in the field of climate protection and in the creation of equal living conditions from Maintal to Sinntal. While this is convenient, it does not meet the challenges of our time and the mandate of the electorate.”

The aborted coalition negotiations with the Greens and the FDP have already shown that fresh winds and new ideas are not desired on the topics that move the people in the circle: “The results of the Grand Coalition in recent years have been devastating. None of the 90 measures were implemented by the cycle path concept, instead a new concept was drawn up, the school development plan had to return to the committee due to numerous errors, the Academy of Health and Care is still not standing, and a Co2 balance sheet that has been overdue since 1997 is still missing", Bousonville sums up.  ‘The district is one of the last to join the eco-model regions of the State of Hesse, although it has the largest share of organic farms in Hesse. Broadband expansion is slowing down in many places, and important personnel positions in the district are missing, for example for climate protection, cycle path expansion, integration and migration.”

A request by the Greens to increase the number of posts in the health office was rejected at the end of 2019, "when calling for stronger gun laws after the Hanau attack, a round table was set up that did not meet again after a one-off meeting. After four years of joining “Hessen aktiv”, no catalogue of measures on climate protection has been drawn up and initiatives with which the district councillor Susanne Simmler boasts, such as the reusable deposit cup “Main-Kinzig-Krug” or the plastic renunciation in the “MKK-Lädchen”, all come from the opposition”, the vice-presidents Viola Haßdenteufel and Jakob Mähler add. ‘Being photographed alongside flowering meadows is a start, but it does not guarantee a sufficient contribution to combating the climate crisis and species extinction at the district level.’

"If the grand coalition now announces that it wants to continue this work, you can be scared and anxious," says Bousonville. “It is clear that the SPD and the CDU have not recognised the signs of the times and are ignoring the voters’ will to increase environmental and climate protection. The lowest common denominator of this GroKo in the MKK is the secured majority in order to be able to govern without ambition and without worry.”

For the Greens, this is an opportunity to ‘continue to fight for genuine climate protection and social policy with applications and requests’. The SPD and CDU claim a ‘clear course’ here: “The course is only going in the wrong direction”, concludes Bousonville.
