The Hanau attack must never be repeated.
Green Main-Kinzig: Combating Racism Remains a Social Task
February 19 marks the third anniversary of the racist attack in Hanau: "We commemorate the victims and stand in full solidarity with those affected and relatives," said the spokespersons of the district board of the Greens Main-Kinzig, Emily Benatzky and Ahmet Cetiner, as well as the board of the district parliamentary group, Reiner Bousonville, Viola Haßdenteufel and Jakob Mähler.
"The anniversary clearly shows us that the fight against racism continues to be and remains a task for society as a whole. In addition to the commemoration of the victims of this crime, the circumstances must continue to be fully clarified and worked through.” There are also some outstanding questions: “We are particularly looking forward to receiving the relevant answers from the Committee of Inquiry of the Landtag.”
Racism must be taken seriously in all areas of life: “The attack in Hanau was not an isolated case of racially motivated violence. The number of offences recorded is frightening and the number of unreported offences is likely to be many times higher than the official number of the federal government.’
The survey results of, for example, the AfD in Thuringia and Saxony show "that xenophobic statements and openly pronounced racism have moved back into parts of society. This is worrying, but at the same time it shows that there is a lack of education and awareness-raising", said the Greens.
It therefore needs a reminder of Hanau's deed and further political reappraisal, says Mahwish Iftikhar, migration and integration policy spokeswoman for the Green parliamentary group: “The mourners deserve support and hearing.”
In order to create safe and inclusive communities, racism must be combated structurally, institutionally and in everyday life: “Racist, anti-Semitic and fascist statements and actions have no place in our world. We need an active memory policy to meet the challenges of combating racism. We need to create a plural society.”
Finally, the Green representatives thanked the work of the relatives and the initiative on 19 February: “This is an important social commitment to tolerance and peaceful coexistence. An act like that in Hanau must never be repeated.’
