Last Saturday marked the second anniversary of the horrific, racially motivated attack in Hanau. Numerous members of Bündnis 90/Die Grünen Main-Kinzig, members of the Landtag and Bundestag factions, commemorated the victims at the official rally on the market square in Hanau.
On the same evening, Grüne Jugend, Kreisverband Main-Kinzig and the local association of the Greens Hanau invited to an online discussion with the title: What has changed since the attack? Moderator Mahwish Iftikhar, member of the parliamentary group of the Greens Main-Kinzig, had won prominent speakers such as Lara Klaes (spokesperson of the Green Youth Hesse), Vanessa Gronemann (member of the parliamentary group of the state parliament), Omid Nouripour (chairman of the Federal Association B90/Greens), Markus Bocklet (member of the parliamentary group of the state parliament) and Robert Erkan (city councillor of the Greens Hanau), who exchanged views with the numerous participants following their contributions.
In his video address, Omid Nouripour described the incision that the attack meant for Germany, people with migration history in particular and also for him personally. “We must fight racism at all levels. This includes countering hatred and hate speech, whether in parliament, in the canteen or in the canteen.
Schoolyard”, says Nouripour. Because it is clear that structural and everyday racism are far from belonging to the past. This was also underlined by Lara Klaes in her contribution.
As far as the Hanau attack is concerned, Robert Erkan knows how important it is to provide information, reconnaissance and financial support to the relatives of the victims. Erkan was immediately appointed as the victim representative of the city of Hanau. Enlightenment helps families deal with the horrific act that killed their loved ones, even if it could not make up for the act and its consequences.
After the assassination, the Green Party, through its participation in the state government, has a special responsibility in clarifying the crime and compensating the families of the victims and survivors of the assassination. Vanessa Gronemann, Chairwoman for the Greens in the Committee of Inquiry, reported on the current status of the work of the Committee of Inquiry in the Hessian Parliament and the established Victims' Fund.
