The district council shall decide:
The funds for the expansion of the cycle path will be increased from 300,000 euros to 1.5 million euros.
Explanatory memorandum:
Cycling will increase significantly in the coming years. In order to promote this sustainable mobility, appropriate budgetary resources are needed.
At the same time, the cycling concept is to be completed at the beginning of 2022. In order to swiftly implement concrete measures from this concept, the budget of EUR 300,000 is not sufficient, especially if, as decided by the Grand Coalition, bicycle parking spaces still covered by this budget are to be built.
None of the 90 measures were implemented from the original cycle path concept. This shows not only the unwillingness to invest in the expansion of cycle paths, but also the lack of financial leeway that the district leadership has given itself due to its own limitations in the budget.
In recent years, around 12 million euros have been spent on the expansion of the district roads. The approach we have chosen for the expansion of the cycle paths is therefore only about 10 % the existing funds for road construction.
Apart from specific improvements, there is an urgent need for the concrete extension and new construction of cycle paths on district roads in order to increase the network of cycle paths and make cycling more attractive.
If a long-term transition to climate-neutral mobility is to succeed, the Main-Kinzig district must lay the foundation here by expanding the corresponding cycle path infrastructure.
